And Continuing.... The works of artist Deirdre Schanen will be featured in an exhibition titled “Poetry in Paint: Abstract Works by Deirdre Schanen,” which opens Friday, April 4th at Gallery 28 Fine & Functional Art, located at 28 N. Fourth St., in the North Historic District of Downtown Geneva. The public is invited to meet Schanen at her Gallery 28 opening reception during the monthly First Fridays Gallery Walk from 6 – 9 pm, when participating Geneva Art Galleries feature artists or special events. The exhibit, which runs through April, will display Schanen’s mural-sized, colorful abstract paintings, influenced by the beauty of Lake Michigan and the Midwestern landscape, as well as moderately-sized pieces. Many of her pieces are large scale, such that the painting becomes the environment, and the viewer becomes part of the art in experiencing it. Schanen, who earned her Masters of Art from William Paterson University in N.J. and studied at the Art Students League of New York, loves to work on large canvases. “I love painting large canvases because it is so easy to become physically involved with the work,” Schanen says. “Everything is done big: large brush strokes, immense areas of color, lots of room to make many different markings or to just paste something on. I can’t just sit and quietly dabble paint. I need to stand, reach, dance with the canvas.” Ms. Schanen does not plan her paintings in advance; always making the end product a surprise. “My paintings are not planned but develop while I work on them. I never know how or where they will end, but trust that, ultimately, they will contain my experiences,” Schanen says. She approaches the broad plains of the empty canvas with the excitement and apprehension of the unknown. Everything develops as she works. Often, a piece is begun with a single pencil or ink marking. That mark dictates the next mark, and that the next. Paint or glaze is applied to canvas; layered repeatedly until the desired effect is achieved, and the process of creating the piece is at last finished. When a work or series of works is completed, Deirdre entitles each piece. Her titles stem from poetry she has read; she records words or phrases that have special meaning to her in a diary she keeps, and later pairs a fitting title to each painting, based on it’s personality, mood, and her experience in creating it.
