James Dudley Slay III was born in 1953 in Jackson, Mississippi. In 1960, he moved with his family to Phoenix, Arizona, and at age 13 received private instruction in oils and acrylics. In 1967 when Slay moved to California, his passion to paint landscapes became the catalyst that evolved his artistic dream into a lifelong pursuit.
Slay began his formal instruction in illustration at the New England School of Art and Design in Boston, Massachusetts. He later followed this with attendance at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, and the Otis Arts Institute in Los Angeles, California. He acquired personal instruction from Sergei Bongart, who had a profound influence on his artistic direction. He has also studied under Karl Demwolf, Frank and Margot Lennartz, Frank Serrano and Mario Mirkovich of the California Arts Club.
His specialty is painting in the plein air tradition and in his studio. His work currently resides in private collections nationwide and internationally.
